New Podcast for Help with Money Management
July 26, 2007
If you’re like me, money management is not exactly your strongest suite in business—and poorly managed cash flow can be the death of a small business. That is why I am loving this new podcast series from StartupNation called "Managing Your Money" (the link goes directly to the feed). I thought the first one was off to a great start with cash flow forecasting, and I just loaded the second one (on revenue analysis) into my iPod. So check it out and be stop being clueless about managing money in your business!
The Five Business Colleagues You Should Have
July 25, 2007
I read a post over at CNN.com today (redirected from Oprah.com, apparently) entitled Five friends every woman should have. It got me to thinking—is there a business equivalent for you entrepreneurs out there? Too many entrepreneurs try to exist in a vacuum instead of seeking out the help and support that can bring them to success. So here it is, the five people you should have on your "team" when you are an entrepreneur:
Sorry for the technical problems …

Apparently PG&E was having some power issues in SF, knocking out some pretty big players like Craigslist, Technorati, and Six Apart—who is the parent company of TypePad, the host of this site. They seem to have it under control now. Thanks for your patience!
Carnival of the Capitalists
July 23, 2007
Hello, and welcome to the Carnival of the Capitalists for Monday, July 23rd, 2007. I, Nikole Gipps, am your host for today. I maintain 2 blogs: the one you are reading this on, Small Business Essentials, and another one, Web Technology for Entrepreneurs, which is hosted at StartupNation. I also run a web design and marketing firm, NHG Consulting, which mainly works with small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Two notes before I get started:
Carnival of the Capitalists - Submit Now!
July 20, 2007
OK this is a little late, but I’m hosting the Carnival of the Capitalists on Monday. So submit your entries now! For more information, see About the CotC, On/Off Topic, and Entering the CotC. (People seem to be confused about the submissions, so I found this form you can use.)
And if you’re wondering what the heck a blog carnival is, you’ll just have to wait for Monday’s StartupNation post. :-)
There I am, on Google News.

This isn’t about tooting my own horn … it’s just about that sense of, well, something that you get when you see yourself in a national press release for the first time. It’s pride in your work. It’s a renewing of the faith that keeps a startup going through those tough early days. It’s that boost of traffic that tells other people that you are here to stay. It’s funny because I have written plenty of them for other people, but I have never been the "star" of one myself. It almost makes all these long hours worth working!
