Can Anyone Comment?
January 18, 2008
I have been having a lot of problems commenting on other blogs lately, which is making it a little hard to participate on some of my favorite sites. Today, the problem occurred to me when I couldn’t submit something in my own WordPress admin. There seems to be some problem between Firefox and the WordPress submit functions. (Mac only? I don’t know.) Has anyone experienced this? How about on my site—anyone have a problem? If you can’t post a comment on this entry to tell me about a problem, just e-mail me. I’m hoping this post will draw some Google traffic for people having the same issues so that we can get to the bottom of it. In the meantime, I am using Safari to read my regular daily fare to see if that helps. Did I mention that I really kinda hate Safari?
Update
I’ve been contacted by the support department at Akismet, who say they have fixed this problem on their end. I am going to test that theory out today and see if it is true.

Got something to say?

Not a problem for me, Firefox 2.0.0.11 over XP on X86. Far as my 3 blogs, not a problem either at admin, or in test commenting, but my WP ver is back at 2.1.1 (updating pending…)
I see several comments on the more recent thread, so has it resolved?

Well as for commenting on this blog, it’s working.
As for me on other blogs … sometimes submit isn’t working. Sometimes I’m just ending up in everyone’s spam box. Is it the .info URL?
Hmm, shouldn’t think it is the .info.
The symptoms are problems commenting on other sites when hitting submit to generate a POST header, right? And it also happens when you are in your own Wordpress Admin?
I looked around at the FF support forums, and I noticed that from time to time problems are reported with cookies being either overwritten by malware, or more likely interfered with by anti-malware. Another possibility is that you are using extensions that aren’t fully compatible with your core version? Has the core been updated recently, and not perhaps an extension?
Have you tried running FF in safe-mode and tried to reproduce the problem?
Maybe open the cookie manager interface, and see if the cookies for the site you are interacting with have suddenly expired or something?
Nothing on the FF forums recently that seemed to speak directly to the problem you are experiencing…
Sorry not more help
Mike
Oh, by the wat, in so far as wordpress is concerned, includes-comment . php includes functions like sanitize cookies and get current commenter that check cookies to extract author, e-mail, and author’s URL as part of the comment processing.
If your cookies change, or expire, this would probably create symptoms similar to what you are experiencing . . .
You know IANAL, well IANAG guru

The submit button thing seems to be OK now. Maybe just a restart-needed glitch. I tend to keep my browser open without about 30 windows sometimes … er … hehe.
As for the comments, it seems to be something with my domain name. I can comment on the problematic sites (mostly on the Creative Weblogging and B5 Media networks) if I use my company website, nhgconsulting.com, or no website listed. But if I try using smallbusinessessentials.info or smallbusinessessentials.net, the comment goes into spam. And here I thought I was so smart by putting an actual informational site onto a .info! Oh, bother (says Pooh Bear)
Thank you for all your help. I’m still trying to find the solution to this. I had someone mark me as not spam on their sites, but I still come up as spam on future comments it seems.
